Greatest Mistake

Here's 2 more panels from The Last Leaf. The inking has gone well.... so far. Some of the pages are very thick with whiteout, though, which makes for some pretty ugly looking originals. Strangely, I don't really believe in "getting it right" the first time, in regards to inking. I don't mind making mistakes on the page. In fact, I've gotten good at using whiteout the moment things aren't going right.

Oh Yeah! You can get your own sneak peek of THE PERHAPANAUTS: MOLLY’S STORY (by Dezago, Weinstein, Copland and Thomas) : http://forum.superpouvoir.com/showthread.php?t=14426

Time is running out for pre-ordering your copy of the Perhapanauts: Molly's Story one-shot from your local comics retailer. Please, please, please consider going to the shop and asking them to order you a copy. Chances are, if you don't get them to do that, there won't be one there for you to pick up on release day. Take the following code with you and ask them to pre-order it for you. DEC09 0376

Written by Scott Weinstein and Todd Dezago and coloured by Mike Thomas. The book will feature a flip cover drawn by Perhapanauts co-creator, Craig Rousseau! So please, take the time to order one for your LCS. All involved will be forever grateful! Plus, I think it's a great book... :)

Have a wonderful Christmas, everyone!

Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing

Yeah, I know. Over 2 weeks with no update. Bad, bad, bad. We shan't speak of it again, agreed? Good. For the past week, I've had the Perhapanauts script (penned by Scott Weinstein and Todd Dezago) clipped to my drawing table as I've worked through the layouts for the entire 22 pages. I'm still not quite done, but what I have drawn is not bad. I found that the layouts were pretty loose when I started and then got tighter and tighter as I progressed towards the "big finish". A few more pages to go and then I can focus on tightening them up to ink.

Oh, and there will be a post tomorrow.

Every Little Thing You Do Is Magic

Ok... I like drawing Thor, Daredevil, Moon Knight AND The Thing.

Here's ol' Blue eyes, himself.

What else is going on, you ask.... ? I'm inking the UFO pages and getting ready to fly to Charlotte for Heroes Con! The con is going to be a great time. I get to hang with Braids of the Gorgon writer/co-creator Ken Faggio for the whole show, which is really cool since we've been working together for 9 years and this is our first face to face meeting! I also get to see the Perhapanauts crew (Todd, Craig and Rico), which is great timing as I just got the full issue Perhapanauts script from Todd Dezago and Scott Weinstein. We're going to go over it and make sure the Molly story is handled just right. Once I get back from the con and finish off the inks for the UFO story, I'll be digging into the Perhapanauts script. It's going to be so kick ass!

In A Big Country

click the Bigfoot to see him Bigger
I was over at Todd Dezago's Perhapanauts blog and read the news that Perhapanauts #6 should be out on June 24. And even better news, Todd and Craig will have the issue available for purchase at Heroes Con, the weekend before that Wednesday! Sweet!

In honour of that event, I've done a drawing of one of my favorite Perhapanauts members, Big. I may give it a colour treatment... if I can find the time.

Good + Bad Times

These pages are from the Marvel Age Team Up #4 script by Todd Dezago. Big shout out to Todd for sending me the script! I had a lot of fun doing this and I hope that it made me a stronger artist. There are definitely things I would change. No page is without some need of tweeking, that's for sure. But, as promised, here are the 5 sample pages I took with me to the Emerald City Comic Con... warts and all. Feedback is always welcome. Good or bad, as long as it is constructive, it's all good.

Eraserhead

Work on the Thor sample pages has commenced! Friend and writer extraordinaire, Todd Dezago, stepped up big for me and sent over a script he wrote for Marvel that has Thor in it! It's a Marvel Age Team Up script, so I get to draw Spider-Man, too! Here's a rough of one of the panels from it. Pay no attention to the floating head in the upper left... that was a failed first attempt which happened to be just nice enough to not warrant erasure. I'll Photoshop it out when I make my rough layout to pencil from.

And here are a couple of Thor villains that I love to draw but aren't in the Dezago script. Oh well, maybe next time, Hela and Loki.

Cover Up

click image to see it bigger
Today is the day, people! Today we see the release of Perhapanauts #5! Man, am I ever excited! Not only because another issue of the Perhapanauts is out, but also because this particular issue contains the 7 page story, "Evaluation", penned by Todd Dezago, coloured by Chris Summers and drawn by me!

And, there's more! Above are the 2 covers that grace this month's issue. The one on the left is the front cover, created by the ever impressive Craig Rousseau and Rico Renzi! The one on the right is the back cover by... well... me! The drawing came pretty fast, but the colouring took me forever! ;)

I hope you all get the chance to check out the book and like what you see!

Hamlet/It Was A Very Good Year

These are the first 2 panels of the Perhapanauts back up story, Evaluation. I did the line art, it was coloured by Chris Summers and written/lettered by Perhapanauts co-creator Todd Dezago. The story is in Perhapanauts #5, which is out at all comic book shops (that ordered it, that is) tomorrow! Hopefully, you all will get a chance to check out my first time published... in colour! And in an Image book, too! The year has started on a very good note.

Ok, back to colouring the final Braids of the Gorgon page!

Speaking In Tongues

click image to see it bigger
I was hoping to have the trade dressed final Perhapanauts cover image for you today, but Todd has been so swamped with stuff that he hasn't been able to send one my way. That's cool. I've got something else to share with you good people!

The above image is a sketch I did in a convention sketchbook for Robotika creator and friend, Alex Sheikman. It's a drawing of Cherokee Geisha (CG), one of Alex's Robotika characters. I'm a huge fan of his book and thought I'd do a drawing concerning the "controversy" over the way CG's word balloons were drawn (in a vertical manner). I thought it was a brilliant way to convey the difficulty people have understanding others who speak with an accent. The reading public? Not so enthusiastic. So in the second Robotika series, Alex "corrected" how she spoke and all was well again in the comic blogosphere. Sigh.

"For A Few Rubles More", the second Robotika mini series will be starting to come out again very soon. Make sure to try and track it down. It's good stuff!

5 Days In May

click image to see it bigger
This past weekend was mostly spent at home drawing and inking a Perhapanauts cover for the upcoming 5th issue. That's the issue that will have the 7 page backup story I illustrated, so don't forget to ask your Local Comic Book retailer to get you one. Todd and Craig offered me the chance to do the flip cover for that issue, I opportunity that I couldn't pass up! The catch was that they offered it to me on Wednesday and needed it done by noon today!

As some of you fine people know, I'm not the fastest comic book drawer guy the world has ever seen, so this looked to be a huge challenge... to come up with a fully inked and coloured Perhapanauts/Image Comic worthy cover in all of 5 days. But as luck(?) would have it, I managed to get the whole thing done by Sunday afternoon! The fact there was almost no colouring needed for it helped a lot. My wife said that it reminded her of Frank Miller's Sin City covers, which is cool.

The above image is my rough sketch, with cover dress added to get the sense of scale and placement. On Wednesday, I'll post up the inked cover, so come on back!

Looking For Clues

In my last post, I mentioned that I'd have more Perhapanauts news to share today, and boy, do I! Maybe this will be a good clue to what I'm about to share...

click image to see it bigger
Yep, I'm doing the art for a Perhapanauts backup story! Penned by Perhapanauts co-creator and writer, Todd Dezago! It runs for 7 pages and it tells the story about when Big goes... oops... I can't tell you about that! You'll just have to read it when it comes out.

It's Gonna Be (Alright)

Whoa, Baby! A few weeks ago, I got a sweet little email from Perhapanauts artist Craig Rousseau which happened to have this file attached to it...
click image to see it bigger
That's right! My Perhapanauts pinup, graced with the outstanding coloring skills of Rico Renzi! I spoke with the book's most excellent writer, Todd Dezago, and he did indeed confirm that this little scribble will be in the fourth issue of The Perhapanauts (on sale Sept 24)!

Look, Mom! I'm going to be in an Image comic book!

Oh, and I have more Perhapanauts involvement type news coming on Friday!

Exactly Where I'm At

Heroes Con was excellent! I got to meet a bunch of people face-to-face that I've only known through the Worldwide Web. The internet is an amazing thing, but getting a chance to talk to fellow comic creators in person is soooo much better.

I had a great time talking to Perhapanauts creators Todd Dezago and Craig Rousseau. I'm a huge fan of the 'Nauts, so it was very cool to get a chance to hang with them. Todd has offered me a chance to do a little something for a backup feature for an upcoming issue, which I jumped at in a heartbeat! As a warm up to whatever that something will be, I did a Perhapanauts pin-up (below). I took it down to Heroes and gave it to Todd. He seemed to like it and even thinks it should appear in the 4th issue of the book! Sweet!

Being a HUGE Guy Davis fan, it was an amazing few minutes when I got the chance to talk shop with him while he drew a very cool Marquis sketch for me... for free! Thanks, Guy!

I also got the chance to talk to some comic creator friends like Kevin Mellon, Dennis Hopeless, Kody Chamberlain, Josh Elder, Dwight L. MacPherson and Charlie Kirchoff (and his lovely wife, Elbonie). All in all, Heroes Con was excellent and I'm very close to saying I'll be back there again next year.

Meanwhile... back at home...
Things are moving on the Kill All Monsters! pitch pages. I had a few days off from drawing, after my trip to Heroes Con, but now I'm all about the giant robots kickin' giant monster butt action!

More soon!
