We were over on Vancouver Island for the weekend, visiting my Grandparents. It was great getting a chance to see them, as we don’t get over there as often as we would like to.
This is a page from my sketchbook that I took with me for the ferry ride. Just doodles… mostly to keep my head in the giant robot realm. I’m getting close to finishing the illustration gig I have going. Then, it’s all about finishing up the pages for Hell’s Gate and starting the new Kill All Monsters pages. Although, the book may go through one more name change before it hits its new online home. More info on that soon.
I really surprised myself when I chose to draw this particular character. When I was first getting into comics, Bill Willingham’s Elementals was something to behold. Strangely, Morningstar was not my favorite character from the book. In fact, of the 4 main heroes, she was the one I liked the least. Yet, here she is.

I had this almost ready to go about 2 hours ago. Then the power for the entire block went out and I lost everything I had done… including the basic scan of the drawing. Saving while you go? That’s for squares, man! I live by the seat of my comic book making pants, yo! No feature like saving is going to suck the spontaneity out of my drawing process, brah!
Um….
So, the power is back on and the scanning and zip-toning has been done, again. I even saved it, this time.
I almost never know what I am going to draw when I’m sketching for fun. Usually, I will make 3 or 4 marks with the penĀ before I start to hone in on something. And… sometimes, I get things like… well… this. Something referencing the graffiti making alter ego of Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Don’t ask me, man. I only drew it.
